Brittany Marchand cracks top-5 at Lady Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Brittany Marchand, a National Team member from Orangeville, Ont., finished in a tie for fourth Tuesday at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic played at Rio Mar Country Club.

The N.C. State senior carded an even-par 216 (71-72-73) to finish 5-strokes back of medalists Aurora Kan of Purdue and Stephanie Meadow of Alabama.

Joining Marchand near the top of the leaderboard was Team Canada and N.C. State teammate Augusta James. The Bath, Ont., native just missed the top 10, finishing in a tie for 11th at 2-over par (73-74-71).

Collectively, the N.C. State Wolfpack finished tied for 6th at 29-over par. Arkansas took home the trophy with a convincing 14-stroke victory at 3-over par.

National Team member Jennifer Ha of Calgary and Development Squad member Taylor Kim of Surrey, B.C., were also in action in Puerto Rico. Playing for Kent State, they finished T41 and T56, respectively.

Adam Svensson wins Matlock Collegiate Classic

Team Canada’s Adam Svensson showed no signs of rust after a lengthy break from NCAA action – he won medalist honours at the Matlock Collegiate Classic on Tuesday at the Lone Palm Golf Course in Lakeland, Fla.

The Surrey, B.C., native was dialed in on Monday’s second round – he set a school record with an 8-under 64. The 20-year-old finished four strokes ahead of second place Ernesto Vitienes of Lynn University. This marks the third victory of the season for the Barry University sophomore, who also has captured the Brickyard Crossing title as well as the Guy Harvey Invitational.

Collectively, the Buccaneers finished as runner-up, six strokes back of champion Lynn University. Barry currently sits as the No.1 ranked team in NCAA Div II men’s golf.

They tee-it-up again next month at the St. Edwards Invitational in Austin, Tex.

Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith named to Ben Hogan Award Watch List

Thirty golfers have been named to the Ben Hogan Award Watch List including Canadians Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont. and Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ont.

The Ben Hogan Award is the most prestigious award in men’s college golf and is presented annually to the top men’s NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer taking into account all college and amateur competitions during a one-year period.

Both in their senior year at Kent State University, Conners and Pendrith have excelled on the collegiate and national level. Conners is currently the highest ranked Canadian amateur in the world at No. 22, while Pendrith sits at No. 28.

As the reigning Jones Cup champion, Conners was also semi-finalist at the U.S. Men’s Amateur championship and runner-up at the Canadian Men’s Amateur championship this summer. In NCAA action, he became the first back-to-back champion of the Gopher Invitational in 2013.

Pendrith, 22, captured the prestigious 2013 Porter Cup and also finished tied for second at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship. This fall at Kent State, he finished runner-up at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational.

A list of 10 semifinalists, which could include individuals not on the current list, will be unveiled on Wednesday, April 16, 2014. On Wednesday, May 7, that group will be pared down to three finalists. The winner will be crowned at a black-tie banquet at Colonial Country Club on Sunday, May 18, prior to the start of the PGA TOUR’s Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Notable past champions of the Ben Hogan Award include PGA TOUR stars, Hunter Mahan (2003), Bill Haas (2004), Ryan Moore (2005), Rickie Fowler (2008), Kyle Stanley (2009). The lone Canadian to win the award was the Web.com TOUR’s Nick Taylor (2004).

Corey Conners comes from behind to win Jones Cup

SEA ISLAND, Georgia – Listowel, Ont. native Corey Conners captured the Jones Cup after besting Austin Connelly of Irving, Texas on the first playoff on Sunday at the Ocean Forest Golf Club.

Conners, 21, was 1-stroke back in a tie for fourth heading into the final round. He gained the outright lead earlier in the day before losing a stroke with a bogey on 18 to force the playoff. The Kent State senior collected himself and went on to defeat Connelly with a par on the first playoff hole. Conners finished at 2-over par for the championship after carding rounds of 72-73-73.

With the win, Conners will move up in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) from his current position at 41st. The Jones Cup is a premier amateur event that is highly ranked and features some of the best amateurs in the world.

Team Canada member and Kent State teammate Taylor Pendrith was the next highest Canadian on the leaderboard. The Richmond Hill, Ont. native finished T26 at 10-over par (75-75-76).

Canada’s Conners sits one-shot back at Jones Cup

SEA ISLAND, Georgia – Team Canada’s Corey Conners continued his strong play in Georgia, carding a second-round 73 to remain in the hunt heading into the third and final round of the Jones Invitational.

Conners, a Kent State senior, is one of four players tied for fourth place at Ocean Forest Golf Club. The 21-year-old of Listowel, Ont. native was a model of consistency Saturday, recording 15 pars on the day. He is 1-over par, chasing the lead held by three others at even par.

National Team member Adam Svensson slipped down the leaderboard into a tie for 20th. The  Surrey, B.C. native was hurt by three consecutive bogies on the back nine to finish with a 3-over 75. The 20-year-old is now 5-over par through two rounds of play (74-75).

Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ont. also shot a 3-over 75. He is currently 6-over par (75-75) and sits tied for 29th.

Elmira, Ont. native Garrett Rank improved on his opening-round Saturday, carding a 2-over 74 after his opening round of 77. He moved up 13 spots to sit tied for 37th.

Victoria, B.C. native Kevin Carrigan had a difficult day. The 27-year-old slipped into a tie for 61st after recording an 8-over 80.

Corey Conners leads Canadians at Jones Cup

SEA ISLAND, Georgia – Team Canada’s Corey Conners sits just two-strokes off the pace after the opening round of the Jones Cup Invitational at Ocean Forest Golf Club.

Conners, 21, shot an even par 72 which featured four birdies on the back 9. He is currently tied for fifth with three others and will look to make his way up the leaderboard when play resumes tomorrow.

Kevin Carrigan of Victoria, B.C. also opened well in Georgia – he currently sits at tied for 15th after carding a 2-over 74. Team Canada member and Surrey, B.C. native, Adam Svensson, also fared well. The 20-year-old Barry University student sits tied with Carrigan in 15th spot after going 2-under on his final six holes.

Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ont., also a member of Team Canada’s National Team, finished in a tie for 25th after opening with a 3-over 75.

Garrett Rank of Elmira, Ont. struggled in his opening round to a 5-over 77. He currently sits 50th.

Canadians ready to take on elite field at Jones Cup

SEA ISLAND, Georgia. – Five Canadians will take on an elite field of amateur golfers from across North America as the Jones Cup Invitational gets underway Friday at Ocean Forest Golf Club.

First contested in 2001, the Jones Cup is a 54-hole individual stroke-play event. It has become one of the most popular events on the amateur circuit due to the strength of the field.

The three-day event runs January 31 to February 2 and is being held at Ocean Forest Golf Club – a Rees Jones design which opened in 1995. The club, which has been ranked in the top 100 in the world, previously hosted the 1998 Georgia State Amateur Championship, the 1999 Southern Amateur Championship and the 2001 Walker Cup Match.

Canadians in the field this year include: Garrett Rank of Elmira, Ont.; Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C.; Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont.; Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ont. and Kevin Carrigan of Victoria, B.C.

Also among the many notable players in the field is Eli Cole of Beverly Hills, Calif., the reigning Canadian Amateur champion.

Past participants read like a who’s who of PGA Tour stars. They include Luke Donald, Rickie Fowler, Lucas Glover, Dustin Johnson, Chris Kirk, Jeff Overton, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker, Bubba Watson and Gary Woodland as well as past champions DJ Trahan, Gregg Jones, Nicholas Thompson, Luke List, Kyle Stanley, Patrick Reed and John Peterson.

Gil and Tanguay finish as leading Canadians at South American Amateur

BARRANQUILLA, ATLANTICO, Colombia – One of Team Canada’s newest members, Tony Gil, led all six Canadian men in the field to finish 6th, 10-strokes back of champion Paul Howard of England.

Gil, a 15-year-old Vaughan, Ont. native, had two very strong closing rounds (71, 72) to solidify his place in the top 10. Not far behind him was National Team member Garrett Rank of Elmira, Ont., who closed with a 4-over 76 to finish in a tie for ninth with three others. Fellow National Team member Chris Hemmerich of Kitchener, Ont. battled his way back Saturday with an even par 72 to finish tied for 19th.

On the women’s side, Valérie Tanguay of St-Hyacinthe, Qué. led the Canadian contingent with a final round 77 to finish eighth overall. Victoria, B.C. native Naomi Ko just missed the top 10, finishing tied for 12th after closing with a 6-over 78.

The women’s event was won by Lucia Gutierrez of Peru, who closed with the low score of 12-over par (77-79-72-72).

BARRANQUILLA, ATLANTICO, Colombia – Team Canada’s Garrett Rank of Elmira, Ont. fired a 3-over 75 to sit tied for 6th, five strokes back of leaders Paul Howard and Jimmy Mullen of England, following the third round of the South American Amateur Championship.

Fellow Canadian Tony Gil of Vaughan, Ont. continued his strong play as well, carding a 1-under 71 to climb into a tie for 12th on the leaderboard. Kitchener, Ont. native and National Team member Chris Hemmerich slipped to 24th after struggling with a 6-over 78.

Development Squad member Valérie Tanguay leads all Canadian females after shooting a 3-over 75 to move up six spots on the leaderboard to sit tied for 8th. Naomi Ko of Victoria, B.C. also cracked the top 10, sitting in a tie for tenth at 19-over par with the windy conditions at Barranquilla Country Club.

Canadians climb South American Amateur leaderboard

BARRANQUILLA, ATLANTICO, Colombia – Team Canada’s Garrett Rank fired one of the only under-par rounds of the day at the South American Amateur Championship on Thursday.

The Elmira, Ont. native closed his final nine with two birdies on a windy day at the Country Club de Barranquilla in Colombia to finish at 1-over 145 after 36 holes. Rank’s 1-under 71 vaulted him up the leaderboard into a tie for third with Colombia’s Mateo Gomez. The duo trails England’s Paul Howard by five strokes heading into the third round.

Chris Hemmerich of Kitchener, Ont. and Tony Gil of Vaughan, Ont. both moved inside the top-20 after solid second rounds. Hemmerich currently sits in a tie for 16th after carding an even-par 72, while Gil carded a 4-over 76 to finish the day in a tie for 19th.

On the women’s side, Development Squad member, Naomi Ko of Victoria, B.C. overcame tough conditions to card a 2-over 74 and move into a tie for third. Ko currently sits at 10-over 154. Scotland’s Gemma Dryburgh and Oona Vartianinen of Finland lead the championship at 6-over par.

Valérie Tanguay struggled during the second round carding a 13-over 85 to finish in tie for 14th. Calgary’s Jaclyn Lee sits in 38th position at 24-over.
